Understanding Firewood Measurements (The Honest Cord Guarantee)

The Bailey Ridge "Honest Cord" Guarantee

When you buy firewood, you are buying a specific volume of wood. Unfortunately, some sellers use confusing, non-legal terms that make it impossible to know if you're getting a fair deal. At Bailey Ridge Firewood, we believe in 100% transparency.

What is a Cord?

In the State of California and specifically in Amador County, firewood sold in bulk must be sold by a legally defined unit of measurement called a cord, or a fraction of a cord.

A cord is a stack of wood that measures 128 cubic feet.

To visualize this, imagine a neatly stacked pile of wood that is 4 feet high, 4 feet deep, and 8 feet long (4×4×8=128).

Terms to Be Wary Of

According to the California Department of Food and Agriculture and Amador County Weights & Measures, you should be cautious if a seller uses vague terms like:

  • "Truckload"

  • "Face Cord"

  • "Rick"

  • "Pile" or "Rack"
